Is Elderberry Safe for Dogs? 

As pet owners, we want to make sure that our dogs are happy and healthy. Unfortunately, we can’t apply human health remedies to our pups. Your pup can experience harmful consequences if you give them human medications, supplements, and certain foods. Elderberry is popular among humans for a handful of reasons. Many people enjoy the taste and the many health benefits that elderberry is believed to have. It is rich in antioxidants and vitamins that promote overall well-being. While it is great for humans, elderberry does not benefit dogs.  

The Risks of Elderberry Consumption in Canines 

American elderberries are native to eastern and midwestern North America. Elderberries are becoming more and more a popular in the United States. Elderberry is used to make jelly, syrups, wines, dietary supplements, and more. Elderberry foliage and berries contain a toxin called cyanogenic glycoside. Following ingestion of the fruit or its leaves can potentially lead to cyanide poisoning. The risk of this is very low for most species. Clinical signs of elderberry toxicity may be severe if a large amount of the plant and its fruit is ingested.   

Elderberry Toxicity  

Signs of elderberry exposure can range from severe to mild depending on the amount of material ingested. If only a few berries, leaves, or herbal supplements were consumed then the risk of poisoning is low. Common symptoms of elderberry toxicity include: 

  • Vomiting 
  • Diarrhea 
  • Anorexia 
  • Lethargy 

Treatment 

If your pup has ingested a large number of elderberries, you must call your veterinarian and {et Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 immediately for prompt medical help. Veterinary treatment is required if a large amount of the plant was consumed, or severe signs are prevalent and/or persistent, such as continued vomiting or bloody diarrhea. Specific treatment will depend on the dosage and symptoms of poisoning. While elderberries may be helpful to many in their health journeys, it is best to keep them away from our furry friends.
