Is Mountain Dew Bad for Dogs? 

Many of us need some form of caffeine to wake up and get the day started. Many people choose tea, coffee, soda, or energy drinks as their caffeinated beverage of choice. A popular sugary drink among these choices is Mountain Dew. While you may enjoy this soda, you may be asking yourself, “is soda bad for my dog?” The simple answer is yes, it can be very dangerous and ultimately determinantal to their health. Why Is Soda Dangerous for Dogs? 

Soda is packed with high levels of caffeine which can have adverse effects on dogs. There is no nutritional value in soda, therefore no reason for dogs to consume it.  

Consequences of Drinking Soda 

Soda consumption can lead to a variety of health issues for dogs. The caffeine found in soda can lead to severe clinical signs. Depending on the amount ingested will determine the severity of the symptoms. Potential toxicity signs include: 

  • Hyperactivity 
  • Restlessness 
  • Vomiting 
  • Elevated heart rate 
  • Elevated blood pressure  
  • Elevated body temperature  
  • Abnormal heart rhythm 
  • Tremors 
  • Seizures 
  • Collapse 

Avoid giving your pup any soda as it can be severely dangerous.  

Treatment 

If your dog has consumed soda, you must monitor them closely for any signs of toxicity. Take your dog to the veterinary clinic so your veterancies can evaluate them and determine the correct course of treatment. Keep all soda secured so your pup can’t get to it. Make sure they always have access to plenty of fresh water, so they are hydrated and healthy.
